. >> rose: do we know anything about the president's preparation whether john kerry was not the right guy to play mitt romney, anything like that? >> no, because, you know, i don't know how you can say that, because in a way, mitt romney and john kerry are very formal people, they are obviously well educated people with a kind of refinement about them, they aren't sloppy in any way, obnoxious in any way, they use firm language but both basically strong people, in the accomplishment, it was probably a very good pick but the romney that came in last night i would say you were right a couple of minutes ago, that romney was not predictable, he came in so strong and so in charge that he basically took over the room and i felt he was sufficient on that stage meaning the president didn't need to be on there for romney to put on the show or jim lehrer, it was romney control of that space and physical control of that space which was so dominant, i don't think we have seen anything like it before. >> rose:. >> in probably a presidential debate. >> rose: i also heard this was not a new romney in

we can presume that john kerry was there. let's look at john kerry's experience in this kind of setting. just go beyond the 2004 debates with then-president bush when john kerry was the democratic challenger. he had a series of debates way back in 1996 when he was a sitting senator with another republican governor of massachusetts who was trying to unseat kerry. his name was bill well. they had three debates actually that were epic in scale. so john kerry is clearly battle tested. the president is going to go to ground. he's had some fund-raisers. he just finished one. he's on his way to senator jay rockefeller's house but on sunday he heads to hend henders nevada. they don't want to be in d.c. for this debate camp as we're calling it around here. training at altitude in nevada, preparing for wednesday night in denver when so much is on the line, martin. >> sounds like a boxing match. nbc's mike viqueira, thank you, sir. we'll be right back to "clear the air." john kerry prepared with all the answers mitt romney given. i'm not sure practice is really the question here. i think the bigger question was, were there things that happened in the debate last night that could come back to haunt governor romney. in his own voice he said the medicare plan he has is to move to voucher system. we haven't had him on the record to the camera saying that yet. there were definitely things that happen. i agree with ed, that 58 million people did watch us on tv. but half the people who will vote didn't watch on tv. a lot will do with how the campaigns both used what was said last night in the coming 33 days. megyn: michael doesn't seem, you know, that concerned about it, ed. we've seen a lot of folks on the left from obama's team, obama's team and other who support him going after everybody. from mitt romney to the moderator, really going after jim lehrer, saying where was he? he needed to take more control. we had even chris wallace on fox news last night thought he did inadequate job. discussion among the anchors,

bush and john kerry. is it inevitable? is there a way a president cannot do this? can you mortgage president obama in ap second debate behaving differently? >> i think david pluff is steady and they understand. what david was previewing, i think, is the line of attack you'll see in the second debate. i think it's almost unthinkable to think the president is going to come into the second debate passive and unprepared in the manner that he was tonight. i think there's going to be a lot of sparks in the second debate. one of the things that's interesting that's true about presidential debates is in the flash poll. that number will spread over the next 48 hours because people who are undecided or who believe it will -- is a tie, will side with the conventional wisdom that romney's the winner. they're going to default to agreeing with the consensus view that he won the debate. so you're going to see a tightening in the poll numbers very much. barack obama came that this debate tonight with the race in his total and absolute control. he let mitt romney back in the game.

probably like the day after john kerry lost. >> are any of them changing their votes? >> what's that? >> are any of them changing their votes? >> no, not the democrats, but there are a hell of a lot of independents and swing voters that are sitting there asking whether the president's up to the task. >> 5%. >> over the next four years. >> even if he gets 20% based on that -- >> donny, the election's not over. go to the hamptons this weekend and don't wear socks with your italian loafers. >> i stopped after labor day. >> go to palm beach. have you guys ever, though, seen such a turnaround? >> no. >> spirit is the word. spirit's the word. >> it's just unbelievable. >> one of the things that i think is overlooked about why this could matter so much is these are both really politically appealing, talented guys. they wouldn't be where they were without it. we all know what was politically appealing and personally appealing about the president. we see it almost every day. even if you don't like him, you've got to respect his politically skills in wisconsin yesterday. romney

bush's first debate against john kerry, horrific. is there just something about the first time the president steps out of that bubble and gets hit that hard that they're just not -- they're just not ready for it the first time? >> yeah, i think that there really is something to that. i think -- thought that this performance was more like george w. bush's than reagan's. reagan, you know, when you look back on it now, that was the famous debate where he was wandering down the pacific coast highway. >> yeah, got lost. >> i think it might have been the first signs of early alzheimer's. with george w. bush, he had a tough time he was defending a ridiculous and terrible war. and here obama had to defend a very difficult economy. and it was a tough job. >> the thing that you really noticed last night was that, you know, mitt romney was -- he was into this, you know? >> yeah. >> he was taking joy in the politics of this. he was psyched to be out there. he had done all this prep. and he was ready to go. you know, there was no joy in president
